Online Tourism Market is booming in China

The concept of online trip booking and hotel room purchase has become the buzzword of Chinese Tourism Market. Consumers are becoming more and more comfortable with the concept of online purchases to book trips. With a change in the lifestyle attitude and an improvement in people’s spending ability, more and more people are inclined towards viewing holiday as part of healthy lifestyle.

With wealthy middle class traveling for pleasure during Lunar New year holidays, what they consider the busiest travel period of the year, China’s online tourism market is accelerating at a new pace.

According to the Chinese Internet research and consulting firm, millions of Chinese have chosen to book their trips online using credit cards. While a separate figure on online bookings revenue was not available, China Market Research Group Senior Analyst Ben Cavender, estimated online bookings accounted for 8-10 percent of the market.

iResearch reports that revenue from online flight, hotel and package tour bookings will hit 4.75 billion yuan in 2010 up 27 percent from last year. According to state media data, China's travel industry generated 1.3 trillion yuan in revenue in 2009, up nine percent from 2008, citing figures from the National Tourism Administration.

State media also reported that in 2009, the number of domestic tourist trips rose 11 percent to 1.9 billion from previous year. The year 2010 is expected to be even better for the domestic tourism market with world expo in Shanghai expecting to draw 70 million visitors. Wendy Huang, Royal Bank of Scotland Analyst asserted that travel demand or travel consumption per capita should increase over the next three years in China.
