Dubai's reputation as a top tourist destination in the world will get a further face lift as Dubai prepares to become the longest fully automated rail transport in the world. Set to open on September 9, 2009, the Dubai metro will surely add a new dimension to the city's transport system. The Emirate's ground breaking project will surely provide a unique, world-class experience. Dubai already has pride possessions like the Burj Dubai and Dubai Marina.
Details about the network
The network of Dubai Metro will have the Red Line and the Green Line and as the 52 km Red line nears completion, all preparations are ready to start the construction of Green line in 2010. The network of Dubai Metro will have 43 stations and will able to cover 70 km, thus making it the longest fully automated transport system in the world. The network, which is expected to carry around 1.2 million passengers per day will be looked after by Serco. It is the same firm that is responsible for London's Docklands Light Railway. The first set of the long network is set to run along the Emirate’s Sheikh Zayed Road on the elevated track providing the opportunity to view the breathtaking landscape view of Dubai.
Benefits of the Metro
Once the operation is under way Dubai will enjoy a great benefit of a metro network running through the city. The common populations will find it a lot easier to commute through the city. In fact, not only for daily commuters, the Metro will also be helpful for tourists as it will be touching various spots in the city which have tourist interests. As the number of visitors in Dubai continues to grow with the count of global visitors touching 7.5 million in 2008, this is a facility that was badly needed. Everything is almost ready for completion, only the RTA officials are at the negotiation stage with international and local companies over naming rights.
Dubai Metro will be accessible to everyone and to make the fare system commuter friendly a lot of flexibility has been added to it. Moreover, to integrate the metro system with other modes of transport available in Dubai, a unified card is set to be introduced which will allow travelers to avail all modes of transport.
