China's first luxury cruise liner to hit the waters

Construction of the first Luxury Cruise Liner of China has just started in Xiamen. It is expected to complete in 47 months. At a time, the cruise liner will be able to carry as many as 2000 passengers. The Southeast China International Shipping Center has taken up 10 similar projects in its package including the present one. After the completion, it will be operated by a subsidiary of Beijing-based Shan Hai Shu Group, who has a partnership with Royal Caribbean International of USA, regarding Cruise Tourism Development.

Xiamen, which was a Special Economic Zone known only for export-oriented factories, is now among China’s top leisure destinations. This cruise liner will be named Xiamen China after its completion and will be launched in the sea not before 2018.

A single Cruise Liner is estimated to cost around 3.1 billion Yuan. Some international design firms have been invited to design and construct its interior and exterior. Excellent shopping and entertainment cluster is expected to come up on the cruise terminal, housing a number of luxury stores. Recently many global cruise operators are eyeing direct partnerships with Chinese manufacturers for supply.

The industry observers have estimated that tourists travelling by cruises will increase by 6 or 7 times in the coming decade. At present, Las Vegas is enjoying the maximum Cruise tourists, but after five years, Xiamen is also expected to be in the same position. The infrastructure projects announced in Southeast China recently are key to promote the city as a future shipping hub.
