The premier road race of Jamaica, the Reggae Marathon, celebrated in Negril continues to lure an international following with participants arriving from the U.S., Italy, Germany, Japan and many other countries. The Reggae Marathon is a three-day event, sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board. In 2012 it is scheduled to start from Thursday, December 1 through race day, Saturday, December 3. The participants are quite excited about the series of pre-and-post race events that constitute the core attraction of the Reggae Marathon. Many people will also participate in the Marathon Expo at Couples Swept Away Sporting Complex and the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association’s “World’s Best Pasta Party.” After completing the race on Saturday, the participants can rejuvenate at the Victory Park & Award Ceremony at Long Bay beach Park.
According to John Lynch, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, the Reggae Marathon is a multifaceted event, which truly embodies the ‘Once You Go, You Know’ theme. The Reggae Marathon, half marathon and 10K race course certified by the IAAF, starts at Long Bay Beach Park, located along Negril’s highly famed 7-mile white sandy beach. Racers will first move through the town of Negril and then they will head northward to Green Island.
The Reggae Marathon commissioned Basil Watson, a distinguished Jamaican sculptor, to create the "Bob Marley Trophy" for the first male winner and "Rita Marley Trophy" for the first female finisher of the marathon. These trophies of the marathon will manifest the vibe and spirit of the Reggae Marathon.
All participants to finish the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will be felicitated with a commemorative medal. There is also a provision of special prize category for the High School Boys & Girls Championships in the Half Marathon & 10K and also for the Corporate & Club Championships in the Half Marathon & 10K.
Age Group and Participation Award Certificates will be rewarded in the following categories for both female and male: under 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80 and over.
